STEP-BY-STEP PREPARATION FOR MOVING FROM NZ TO AUSTRALIA

Australia is a beautiful country with so much to offer. As such, it’s no wonder so many people are deciding on Auckland to Sydney moving. However, there are some things you need to do before you jump across the water to your new home. Here is a step-by-step guide to moving to Australia.

  1. Ensure you have the right visa

The first thing you need to do before you consider moving to Australia is to secure the correct Australian visa. As a New Zealand citizen, you are eligible for a Special Category Visa which enables you to live and work in New Zealand for as long as you like.

Since July 2023, a new route has opened up for New Zealand residents to become Australian citizens. Basically, if you have lived in Australia for over 4 years, you can become a citizen by conferral.

This means that if you live in Australia for more than 4 years, have a valid Special Category Visa, and haven’t been absent from the country for longer than 12 months in those 4 years including for 90 days in the past year, you should be able to apply. You will obviously need to pass the citizenship knowledge test and prove you can speak English, but it is a good fast-track route that is really helpful.

  1. Get a job

Auckland to Sydney moving can be so much easier if you can prove you already have a job to step into. On top of the fact that this looks good for your visa application, it also helps to know you have an instant source of income when you arrive. Furthermore, some employers will help you with the costs of moving.

  1. Know where you’re going

Australia is vast, and nearly all of its cities and towns are positioned around the coastline, meaning you’re almost certain of a beautiful beach nearby. However, research each area you’re thinking about moving to and ensure that you’re happy with the people, the crime rate, the local culture, and so on. Lots of people move to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Canberra. However, this isn’t necessarily needed. Remote work is on the rise around the world and Australia is no different, so even if you have a job located in Sydney, it may be possible to live in towns or smaller cities close by.

  1. Look for accommodation

If you’re really lucky you may know people in Australia you can stay with during your house-hunting stage. If you are not blessed with this luck then you need to secure some short to medium-term accommodation for when you arrive, so that you have a base to work from while you go house hunting.

  1. Book an experienced moving company

Auckland to Sydney moving can be a little more complicated than you think, and getting an experienced moving company is an important final step to moving into your dream home.
